The main conditions that are treated with bimatoprost eye drops include glaucoma and ocular hypertension. If left untreated, glaucoma, a disorder marked by elevated intraocular pressure in the eye, can cause damage to the optic nerve and result in visual loss. Bimatoprost lowers intraocular pressure (IOP) by causing the aqueous humor (the fluid inside the eye) to flow out more.

Furthermore, bimatoprost is applied cosmetically. It can encourage the growth of eyelashes, making them longer, thicker, and darker when applied to the base of the lashes. The brand name Latisse is used to sell this cosmetic application.

Bimatoprost eye drops should only be used as directed by a healthcare provider because misuse can result in problems or negative effects.
