Hello,
I've search on the forum and I can't seem to find an answer. I need to convert dental codes to medical and need the ICD-10 diagnosis codes, too. This is what I got to far. I was going to plan on using the dental code for the medical code. I read somewhere that Medical insurance companies may still accept it. Please tell me if this is correct or where I can make it better.
We have a patient with impact 3rds removed under IV sedation.
Dental - Medical - ICD-10
D9310 - 99201 - Z98.818
D7230 - D7230 - K01.1
D9222 - D9222 - Z98.818

D9310 - consultation - diagnostic service provided by dentist or physician other than requesting dentist or physician
can be crosscoded to a new or established patient evaluation & management (E&M) codes - 99202-99205 (new patients), or 99211-99215 (established patient):
(99201 is no longer a valid CPT code, it was removed from the coding system 1-1-2021)
New patients:
99202 – 15-29 mins
99203 – 30-44 mins
99204 – 45-59 mins
99205 – 60-74 mins
Established patients:
99212 – 10-19 mins
99213 – 20-29 mins
99214 – 30-39 mins
99215 – 40-54 mins
D7230 - Removal of impacted tooth - partially bony
There are not direct crosscodes currently for extractions, so you can either bill the "D" code on the medical claim (many insurers these days will process "D" codes when they are medically necessary services), or you can use the CPT code below and include a narrative report describing the procedure:
41899 - Unlisted procedure, dentoalveolar structures
D9222 – deep sedation/general anesthesia – first 15 minutes
and
D9223 – deep sedation/general anesthesia – each additional 15 minutes
can be crosscoded to:
00170 - Anesthesia for intraoral procedures, including biopsy; not otherwise specified
As for the ICD-10 diagnosis codes you listed:
K01.1 - Impacted teeth
Z98.818 - Other dental procedure status
K01.1 sounds perfect for this case. Z98.818 may be applicable, depending on what you're using it to represent.
