Hi, The only place I have found free codes available with descriptions is on www.icd9data.comfrom years 2007-2010. Are there any other resources available?

Hi guest! You can search the ICD-10 codes on pretty much the same site, except it is http://www.icd10data.com/I am not aware of a free resource to search CPT and HCPCS codes and their descriptions, they are all paid subscriptions.

I was wondering if I could get some help. I am looking for a new code for medical to submit to medical insurance. It is for an appliance for the patient to help expand her palate in order for proper airway to move through. It is not TMJ/TMD related or sleep apnea, but could lead to sleep apnea issues as she gets older. Some of the chief complaints are headaches, nerve issues and air way issues. We have submitted these appliances as 21299 to insurance, but I guess medical insurance companies are now saying that code is now inactive. Any suggestions on what other code I can use? They are trying to put it back onto dental but it's not dental it is for sure medically related. Here are the ICD- 9 codes that were used for this claim before everything switched to ICD-10. Hopefully this can help as well for you to help me! 350.2, 327.53, 784.0, 350.8, 350.9. Thank you so much for your help!

Great question. There is not currently a specific medical code for an appliance for expanding the palate that we are aware of. However, i do not show that "21299 - Unlisted craniofacial and maxillofacial procedure" is an invalid or discontinued code, i believe it is still valid so you should be able to use it! But, some other coding options may be:
E1399 - Durable medical equipment, miscellaneous
21499 - Unlisted musculoskeletal procedure, head
21089 - Unlisted maxillofacial prosthetic procedure
D7947 - LeFort I (maxilla - segmented) ***use modifier -52 for reduced services to account for lack of downfracturing.
A narrative report explaining the treatment accompanying the claim is recommended since they are all "by report", “unlisted”, or "miscellaneous" codes.
As for the ICD-9 codes you listed, here are the ICD-10 crosscodes for them:
350.2
ICD-10: G50.1 - Atypical facial pain
327.53
ICD-10: G47.63 - Sleep related bruxism
784.0
ICD-10: R51 - Headache
350.8
ICD-10: G50.8 - Other disorders of trigeminal nerve
350.9
ICD-10: G50.9 - Disorder of trigeminal nerve, unspecified

Which code do you think would be the best? I don't want them to try to process as TMJ/TMD because that is one of the areas they keep trying to put it when it actually isn't? Sorry for all the questions. I just don't want to mess up on this code since supposedly that other code is no longer valid as of April 2016. Thanks again for your help!

Many of our clients use 21499 for services that there is not a specific medical code for, with a strong narrative report explaining what the procedure/service is.
