The doctor will be aspirating stem cells from the lower jaw bone to mix with bone graft material in preparation for a dental implant. What would the proper code on the dental side be?

Hi Guest!

While dental coding is not our forte like medical coding is, we are not familiar with a dental code for this procedure. However, here is a link to a medical policy with codes & coverage criteria from wellmark BCBS titled "Stem Cell Therapy for Orthopedic Indications (Including Allograft Bone Products Used With Stem Cells)":

https://www.wellmark.com/Provider/MedpoliciesAndAuthorizations/MedicalPolicies/policies/Stem_Cell_Ortho.aspx

Coding options listed in this policy are:

20999 unlisted musculoskeletal procedure
38205 blood derived hematopoietic progenitor cell harvesting for transplantation, per collection allogeneic
38206 blood derived hematopoietic progenitor cell harvesting for transplantation, autologous
38212 transplant preparation of hematopoietic progenitor cells; red blood cell removal
38215 transplant preparation of hematopoietic progenitor cells; cell concentration in plasma, mononuclear or buffy coat layer
38230 bone marrow harvesting for transplantation allogeneic
38232 bone marrow harvesting for transplantation autologous
38240 Hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC); allogeneic transplantation per donor
38241 Hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC); autologous transplantation
0232T injection(s), platelet-rich plasma, any tissue, including image guidance, harvesting and preparation when performed
