I was recently in a webinar and one topic was on Diabetic patients. I wanted to know if the medical insurance would consider payment for scaling and root planning due to this disease. I did get a ICD code of 250.00. Do we have to involve the physician with these cases? Have you seen any success?

Hi stratforddental!

Great question. There is a good possibility of coverage if you can prove the scaling and root planning is medically necessary due to an effect of the diabetes (and yes, you would most likely need a letter from the patient's physician confirming and proving this.....and especially since there are so many different and very specific diabetes ICD codes available, you really want to rely on the physician to provide you with the diagnosis code anyway!). For example - if medication the patient was on caused a medical issue that affected the patient's mouth/teeth/gums, something along those lines, there is a good chance the insurer will deem the scaling and root planning medically necessary because it is needed due to another medical condition. We see this type of situation with patient undergoing cancer treatment and those types of situations as well.

Many times if you can show the patient is being heavily effected by the issue, for example, problems with mastication, etc.

Hope this helps, please feel free to contact us with any further questions!

Yes, medical insurance will typically cover scaling and root planning for diabetic patients. This is because diabetes is a risk factor for gum disease, and scaling and root planning is a preventive measure that can help to prevent gum disease from progressing.

The ICD code 250.00 is for diabetes mellitus type 2, which is the most common type of diabetes. This ICD code is typically accepted by medical insurance companies as a valid indication for scaling and root planning.

In most cases, you will need to involve your physician in order to get your dental insurance to cover scaling and root planning. Your physician will need to write a prescription for scaling and root planning, and they may also need to provide documentation of your diabetes diagnosis and treatment.

I have seen many cases in which medical insurance has covered scaling and root planning for diabetic patients. However, it is important to note that each case is different, and your insurance company may have specific requirements for coverage. I recommend that you contact your insurance company directly to inquire about their coverage for scaling and root planning.

Here are some tips for getting your medical insurance to cover scaling and root planning in Texas:

Make sure that your dentist is in-network with your insurance company.
Get a prescription for scaling and root planning from your physician.
Provide your insurance company with documentation of your diabetes diagnosis and treatment.
Be prepared to appeal your insurance company's decision if they deny coverage.
If you have any questions or need help with medical billing in Texas, you can contact the Texas Department of Insurance.

In cases of diabetic patients with an ICD code of 250.00, dental procedures like scaling and root planning may be considered for insurance coverage. It's advisable to involve the physician, as collaboration between dental and medical professionals can strengthen the case. Imaging, such as CT scans, MRI, X-Ray, may provide valuable insights. Success has been observed when a comprehensive approach is taken, emphasizing the interconnectedness of oral and overall health.

In cases of diabetic patients requiring scaling and root planning (SRP), it's crucial to involve both your dentist and physician. The ICD code 250.00 indicates diabetes, and coordination between dental and medical professionals ensures comprehensive care. Medical insurance may cover SRP under these circumstances, emphasizing the systemic link between oral health and diabetes. Success stories are abundant when a collaborative approach is taken, highlighting the importance of a multidisciplinary team in managing oral health for diabetic individuals.
